Finding an Organic Tree
Yes, there is such a thing as an organic Christmas tree! Organic Christmas tree farms use Integrated Pest Management (IPM). It means that trees are grown with the absence of pesticides, so you're not bringing chemicals into your home during the holidays. To get added value from your organic Christmas trees, re-plant them. This way, you’re helping the environment, and you’re teaching your family about environmental responsibility.
But how does one find Christmas trees that are organically grown?
- Check out the local Christmas tree growers’ guide. Many cities and towns now have these kinds of publications, which list local farm products and Christmas trees. Find them at the grocery store, community bulletin board, or farmers' markets. Once you choose your live Christmas tree, make sure that these are certified organic Christmas trees. Some tree farms that sell fresh cut Christmas trees practice organic methods but are not yet certified. Organic certification can be a long process, so ask about their pesticide practices.
- Some environmental organizations in different states offer fresh Christmas tree rental and adoption. They offer outdoor Christmas trees and live potted Christmas trees, delivered to your home for the holiday season, and then are picked up after Christmas. Christmas tree farms who participate in these organizations have sustainably grown organic pines, spruces, and fir Christmas trees. Another option at these farms is if you want to cut your own tree, they will be responsible for replanting and recycling.
- Go to a local organic trade fair during the Christmas season. There is a chance that local tree sellers will be selling the organic Christmas tree you are looking for!
- Hit the internet. There are a lot of websites and networks that allow you access to their links to organic Christmas tree farms throughout the United States. Different sites even bring you a handful of information about organic practices including low-spray and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
