Christmas Light Safety
The holidays are a time for joy and cheer, but there are dangers involved -- besides over-stuffed drivers and aggressive shoppers. As the festivities take hold, some throw caution to the wind and neglect the rules of fire and electric safety. Here are few points to ponder, especially for folks who use Christmas lights:
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions included with your Christmas lights. If possible look for the UL-mark on plugs and cords (usually a tag, but sometimes not), ensuring that a product has been tested for safety against fire and electrical problems.
- Make sure that you insert Christmas lights into the proper socket to avoid electrical fires. Only use lights in the proper locations specified on the packaging, whether indoors or outdoors.
- Inspect the wiring and plugs of your Christmas lights for defects such as exposed wires and crack casing.
- Avoid overloading extension cords with multiple Christmas lights or appliances plugged into the sockets. This also means not to extend a string of Christmas lights too long, as too many connections add risk.
- Use proper insulation materials when hanging your Christmas lights, avoiding metal clips. Instead, use rubber or plastic clips.
- As a rule, always make sure that all Christmas lights and lit decorations are switched off and unplugged before leaving the home or going to bed.
Remember that these safety rules are not only useful during the holidays but can prevent fire and electric hazards when followed all year round.
